  • Dress up a completely flat kitchen cabinet door by choosing three colors of paint. Add pieces of molding for more dimension and to keep paint colors separate.
  • Bleach your cabinets. A good cleaning may be all your woodwork needs to take off the dirt and grease accumulated over time. Commercial cleaners meant for wood are available at hardware stores or home centers. Stained wood will look lighter, thereby brightening up the look of the whole kitchen.
  • Stain your cabinets, by refinishing them with stain and then coating them with polyurethane.
  • Pickle them. Pickling wood cabinets gives them an opaque finish that brings out wood's natural grain, but lets you embellish it with color. The more paint you remove, the more grain you will see.
  • Try decorative painting. Applying such techniques as color washing, rag rolling, sponging, and stippling to your kitchen cabinets will give the painted finish some depth. Complicated finishes will require the expertise of a professional decorative painter.
  • Cover them up. If you're tired of the same old wood kitchen cabinet doors, why not cover them up with a different material, such as urethane, cork, or even wallpaper.

As with other home improvement projects, don't just rely on your own judgment. Call in an expert advisor to help you determine the right new look for your kitchen cabinets. You'll be able to zero in on the right solution without breaking the bank.
