Options Abound

Refacing the kitchen cabinets is one way. This would involve putting a laminate or wood veneer onto them. However, cutting and gluing the laminate in place is hard work, so you may want to call a professional.

You can also paint your kitchen cabinets, perhaps in a lighter shade, to brighten up the whole room. But painting requires patience, and you must be willing to prepare the surfaces carefully. If these tasks don't suit you, then hire a painter to do the job right the first time.

Paint or Reface?

If your kitchen cabinetry is solidly built and in good condition, and you're satisfied with the room's layout, then painting the cabinets is the way to go. Painting will change the color and mood of the room, especially if the kitchen cabinets are made of dark cherry or have a Mediterranean finish, popular in the 1970s. You can even paint old laminate by using a primer especially made for glossy surfaces. If you like your wood cabinets but want them in a different finish, you can strip and refinish them, providing the veneer is in good condition.

You're the best judge of whether you have the experience, patience, and skills to do these jobs yourself or whether it's best to hire a professional. Whatever you decide, you can soon enjoy a brighter and more up-to-date kitchen for a fraction of remodeling costs.
