More Choices and Costs Involved in Refacing Your Kitchen Cabinets

Once you've made the decision to reface your kitchen cabinets, there are a lot of choices to be made, besides the most important one of what finish to use.

Other options include:

  • Having the old wood center glides on kitchen drawers replaced with side-mounted tracks on rollers. One refacer claims that almost everyone redoes the silverware drawer. Many customers opt for new, custom-built drawer boxes;
  • Flooring and countertop installations. As long as they've started the job, homeowners want to update the rest of their kitchen;
  • Replacing the sink and faucets, if they aren't in the best of shape;
  • Adding custom-built corner kitchen cabinets or units that fit over the refrigerator, to match the old ones;
  • Adding islands or crown molding.

One major retailer offers appliance replacement through its refacing service. Other accessories sold by refacers include lazy Susans, wine racks, pull-out trash bins, flip-out drawer fronts, and pull-out shelves.

Cost of Refacing

Naturally, the cost of refacing your kitchen cabinets depends on how much work is done and what materials are used. A refacing job may run anywhere from $4,000 to $9,000. This cost covers materials including the countertop, trim, shelf and drawer liner, accessories, and tax. The cost would be higher, for example, if the homeowners opt for wood, Corian countertops, a new sink, and luxury features. It all boils down to personal taste.
