Whether you're replacing or refacing your kitchen cabinets, its always useful to tackle the project with as much knowledge as possible. Below is a primer on the types of wood you can use for your cabinets, and the ambience they set for the kitchen.

  • Dark Wood Cabinets. Kitchen cabinets in dark wood tones can give the room a rich, upscale feel. These cabinets have clean lines and simple details, providing a formal tone to a contemporary look.
  • Contemporary Dark Wood Cabinetry. Try adding stainless steel door handles to dark wood kitchen cabinets, to give them a sleek look. Granite countertops and rattan bar stools provide some much-needed contrast.
  • Medium-Toned Wood. Honey-colored kitchen cabinets give the room a warm look and blend well with neutrals, such as limestone floors and golden-hued tile and granite.
  • Light Pine. Give knotty pine kitchen cabinets a fresh look with red stone countertops and fully tiled walls. For those on a budget, pine can be a wise choice, though the wood can have a rustic look.
  • Mixed Use. White wood kitchen cabinets on the room's perimeter contrast nicely with a wood island in the center.
  • Wood and Cream. A wood island in the center and wooden china hutch in the corner pair well with cream-colored kitchen cabinets. The honey wood tones are also picked up in the hardwood flooring, caramel-colored chair seats, and hanging copper pots.
  • Simplicity. Blend an open-kitchen plan into the adjoining family room with simple lines and medium-toned woods. Match the wood kitchen cabinet color to the flooring, to seamlessly merge a visible kitchen into a larger space.
